Next stop Wincanton for McCoy

The Tony McCoy roadshow moves on to Wincanton tomorrow as he chases down the milestone of 3,000 British and Irish National Hunt winners.

The 13-times champion jockey was supposed to be at Leicester today where he had a solid book of four rides, all for his boss JP McManus, but heavy rain forced the meeting to be abandoned.

McCoy needs three more winners to hit the magical mark but unfortunately he only has one booked ride in the West Country meaning he will not reach 3,000 until Friday at the earliest. The meeting also needs to survive a 7.30am inspection.

“That’s not helped my cause,” said McCoy of the Leicester abandonment.

“I’ll have to wait until tomorrow and have another go then.

“It would have been nice to have done it today because JP McManus is my boss and has been very loyal to me.

“He has been a great man to work for.

“I would really like to do it in his colours, if at all possible,” the 34-year-old jockey told the BBC.

Friday could be the magical day when he heads to Chepstow.

His agent, Dave Roberts, told At The Races: “He’s going to Wincanton tomorrow to ride Stradbrook and then he’s going to Chepstow on Friday for three or four rides – Jonjo (O’Neill) has a few entries there.

“At this stage it is looking like he will either be at Sandown or Doncaster on Saturday, there’s a few things to sort out yet.”
