Turner opens Johnston account

Hayley Turner returned to Southwell and cashed in with a winning spare mount aboard the Mark Johnston-trained Nightjar in the Play Golf At Southwell Golf Club Handicap.

The 26-year-old only received the call-up moments before the £18,000 (€19,227) feature after Franny Norton decided not to ride due to pulled muscles in his back.

And Turner capitalised on the opportunity by overturning 6-5 favourite Majuro to collect by a length and a quarter on the 7-2 shot.

The record-breaking rider said: “I was asked to ride the horse as I got off my previous mount, and it is unfortunate for Franny.

“It was my first ride for Mr Johnston and it is nice that it was a winning one. He seems to like it round here and he stayed on well without me having to use my stick.” said Turner.
