Leighs card cut short

Foggy conditions at Great Leighs forced the abandonment of the meeting with one race left to run.

Visibility had been difficult throughout the day but the majority of the fixture was completed.

Ashley Bealby, stipendiary steward, explained: “With visibility deteriorating and the onset of darkness it made it impossible. The clerk of the course, the jockeys and the vet were all in agreement that it was unsafe to continue.”

Track spokeswoman Pippa Cuckson added: “I think we have done well to get this far given the misty conditions we have had all afternoon.

“We have got to be grateful to the jockeys for getting on with the job for most of the afternoon and to all of the people for working through in these conditions.

“We were supposed to have an evening meeting today but the fixture was brought forward to help with the continuity of the afternoon racing, and with the meeting now abandoned it may have done us a favour.”
