Sherwood lands sparkling treble

Lambourn trainer Oliver Sherwood enjoyed a day to remember at Hereford by saddling a near 109-1 treble.

The first of those victories came in the Weatherbys Bloodstock Insurance Beginners’ Chase, where 3-1 chance Lyes Green made most of the running under Dominic Elsworth before going on to score by two lengths from Will The Till.

“He’s a classier horse over hurdles but he has been lacking a bit of confidence after having some hard races over the last couple of years,” said Sherwood.

“He has lost his way a little bit so I just wanted him to go and enjoy his racing and it’s good to get a win into him. Hopefully he will go on from here now.”

His stablemate Six Day War (16-1) may have been a surprise winner to many punters in the Lindley Catering Handicap Hurdle under Sam Jones, but Sherwood admits he was expecting a bold performance.

“He is an OK horse and he won on the Flat when he was with Jamie Osborne,” the trainer continued.

“His first two runs for me weren’t that bad and you can forget his last run as I ran him at Worcester in July and I should have given him a break. The handicapper will probably have him now after this but at least he’s won and it’s no great surprise to me.

Sherwood’s hat-trick was completed with hot favourite Finney shedding his maiden tag over obstacles in the Lindley Catering Novices’ Hurdle, giving Elsworth a double on the day.

The trainer was not far off completing a four-timer with his Gratification finding only Swansbrook too strong in the concluding Digibet.co.uk Standard Open National Hunt Flat Race.
