Dettori mount wins St Leger

Conduit and Frankie Dettori took top honours in the Ladbrokes St Leger at Doncaster.

Always travelling well, the colt was settled in behind rivals in the early stages of the season’s final Classic and cruised up to challenge in the straight.

The Michael Stoute-trained 8-1 chance went to the front over a furlong out and despite wandering slightly in the closing stages, stayed on to take the Group One prize by three lengths from Unsung Heroine, with Oaks winner Look Here a creditable third.

Stoute was saddling his first ever winner in the race after 25 previous losers, while Dettori was taking the prize for the fifth time in his career.

Tommy Stack’s Unsung Heroine ran a massive race on just her third career start, while Look Here travelled strongly into the straight but tired late on where the lack of a recent run perhaps told.

Conduit, shunned by Stoute’s stable jockey Ryan Moore in favour of Doctor Fremantle, was the only runner still on the bridle inside the final two furlongs and he eventually scored with a bit up his sleeve.
