Monday afternoon's meeting at Newcastle has been abandoned due to waterlogging following an 8am inspection.

Officials at Gosforth Park had already been forced to abandon a meeting on Friday but had hopes that a couple of dry days would enable them to race on Monday.

However clerk of the course James Armstrong revealed that false patches of ground had left the track unsafe.

"We've had to abandon I'm afraid," said Armstrong.

"It's improved a fraction but not enough to let us race. We've had another 1.5mm of rain overnight and it just can't dry up if it keeps raining.

"The last three furlongs have improved but there is an area from the mile start to the five furlong pole that is unraceable and it wouldn't be safe, especially for two-year-old's."
