Crane claims Newbury prize

John Gosden has abundant strength in the two-year-old department and Doctor Crane advertised his claims as a potential Group-class colt when landing the Trailfinders Conditions Stakes at Newbury.

This was a step up in class for the Doncaster winner, but Robert Havlin rode him with plenty of confidence throughout the seven-furlong contest.

Awinnersgame looked to be in control over a furlong out but the 7-4 favourite came under pressure and was grabbed by Doctor Crane, who went on to score by a length from the staying-on Oratory. It was a further head back to Awinnersgame.

Havlin said: “The ground was quick enough but he handled it well. I rode him at Doncaster and feel he’s on an upward curve.

“He’s still very much a baby, but there ought to be a fair bit of improvement when he’s stepped up to a mile.”
