Double delight for Hannon at Windsor
Richard Hannon is approaching the Weatherbys Super Sprint with his usual strong hand and advertised the well-being of his juveniles with a 135-1 double at Windsor.
Youngsters from Hannon’s yard have carried all before them this term and the trainer has an enviable eight entries in this weekend’s Newbury dash.
And Red Rossini (3-1) kept the champagne flowing at the Thameside track as he led at halfway under Richard Hughes in the Ladbrokes In The Community Charitable Trust EBF Maiden Stakes and kept on gamely to collect by three-quarters of a length.
Hannon said: “He is quick, that is what he is, and we will have to keep him to sharp tracks.
“If there’s a five-furlong nursery at Goodwood I would take him there as the track would suit.”
The second Hannon winner, Tartan Turban, returned a much bigger 33-1 when seeing off stablemate Hawkspur by half a length in the New Football Pools Maiden Stakes.
The colt owes his name to the Scottish-Indian partnership who own him, and is a close relation to the yard’s Greenham winner Paco Boy.
Hannon’s son and assistant Richard junior said: “All of the family is tough and he is no exception.
“He has not shown a lot but will get better as the season goes on.
“He’ll have a break now before his next start and will be ideal for nurseries, and who knows what after that.”
Retired Irish Army officer Pat Phelan saddled Run For Ede’s to a first-ever career success, with the four-year-old getting off the mark at the 14th attempt when landing the Sunley Fillies’ Handicap at a tasty 25-1.
Phelan said: “At long last she has got her head in front – we have had to wait a while for that.
“Ian Mongan has done a lot of work on her and it was a pity he wasn’t available, but we had an able substitute in John Egan, who first rode for me in 1989.
“I had wanted to step her up in trip but this race presented itself, but that is what we will do now.”
Howdigo, a half-brother to classy middle-distance sort Rising Cross, appreciated the step up to just shy of a mile and a half when finishing with a wet sail to spring a 33-1 surprise in the Royal Bank Of Scotland Handicap.
Lady Jinks took the Rent A Pub From Trust Inns Selling Stakes at odds of 6-1 before being bought-in for 3,600 guineas by trainer Mark Usher.
The stewards handed out a five-day suspension (July 28-31 and August 1) to William Carson for using his whip with excessive frequency and when out of contention.
