Briseida takes Falmouth challenge

Impressive German 1000 Guineas winner Briseida is ready to bolster an interesting continental challenge for the Group One UAE Hydra Properties Falmouth Stakes at the Newmarket July meeting.

She will be a rare British runner for trainer Peter Schiergen, who won the 2002 Coronation Cup with Boreal and other top races around the world with the likes of Quijano and Tiger Hill.

Briseida, a daughter of Pivotal, was ridden by Martin Dwyer for her victory at Dusseldorf on June 1, where a sharp turn of foot saw her win going away by two and a half lengths.

“I think if she’s OK, she will run,” said Cologne-based Schiergen, a record-breaking rider in Germany during the 1990s.

“She was a very easy winner of the Guineas and obviously I would hope she’d win at Newmarket.

“It won’t be easy and I’d be happy if she finished one, two or three.”

Other potential overseas raiders for the Falmouth, a mile Group One for fillies and mares, could be the French-trained Darjina and New Zealand representative Seachange.

Schiergen has not made his mind up what to do with Quijano, who won the Group One Gran Premio di Milano on his latest start and is set to continue clocking up the air miles.

“I’m not quite sure with him,” he added. “There are one or two races in America but we could keep him in Germany and then think about Hong Kong at the end of the year.”
