Coronation on Papal agenda
Papal Bull was on Thursday confirmed as Michael Stoute’s only likely runner in next week’s Juddmonte Coronation Cup at Epsom.
The trainer also has Galactic Star and Maraahel engaged but the former takes in Sunday’s Grand Prix de Chantilly, while the latter runs in Thursday night’s Betfair Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown.
Papal Bull, whose temperament seems to often be criticised, worked on Newmarket racecourse under Kieren Fallon last weekend.
Stoute said: “Papal Bull is very talented – he has won four Group races and you don’t mind if they’re quirky and do that.
“He’s been off a long time – he hasn’t run since the Japan Cup (when seventh) but we think we have got him in good shape and he’ll definitely run. Galactic Star will run on Sunday in the Grand Prix de Chantilly.”
Godolphin are mulling over giving their French recruit Literato a try in the Group One event.
“He disappointed us in France last time but his form last year was fantastic,” said Simon Crisford, the team’s racing manager.
“He won the Champion stakes and we know from the guys who have ridden him that he’s a very good horse.
“He has run twice now for us and both times disappointed but we might consider the Coronation Cup as we’re keen to go a mile and a half.”
