Melodramatic set to bypass classic option
Melodramatic, impressive winner of a Nottingham maiden earlier in the month, is unlikely to run in Sunday’s Boylesports Irish 1000 Guineas at the Curragh.
The Sadler’s Wells filly scored by seven lengths last time but trainer Roger Charlton is leaning away from running his charge in Classic company at this stage of her career.
Charlton said: “She’s unlike most by Sadler’s Wells in that she’s not a real mile-and-a-half type but she may stay 10 furlongs.
“With her pedigree it’s very important for us to try to find Listed or Group Three races for her but there isn’t much at a mile.
“We’d possibly be looking at Newbury’s mile-and-a-quarter fillies’ Listed race (Ballymacoll Stud Stakes), which is the week before Royal Ascot.
“The Sandringham Handicap at Ascot is for fillies rated 96-110 and she’s currently rated 98, so that’s a possible,” Charlton told At The Races.
“But I’m also a little wary about the ground as we had a few training problems last year and I don’t want to run her here, there and everywhere without making sure it’s the right track and ground.
“I think the Irish Guineas would be too good for her at this stage, but one might find there are only seven or eight runners.”
