Lucky strike for Channon
There was a surprise in the opening Weddings At The Morritt Median Auction Maiden Stakes at Redcar when 16-1 chance Lucky Leigh raced to a convincing success in the hands of Eddie Creighton.
The Mick Channon-trained filly struck the front about a furlong and a half out and she drew away in good style to pass the post with four and a half lengths to spare over El Bobby, 80-1, who carries the colours of Bobby Robson and his wife Elsie.
Channon’s representative Brian O’Doherty said: “That was a bit of a surprise, but Eddie was very impressed with her.
“Our two-year-olds have taken a bit of time to come to hand, but two won on Saturday and now Lucky Leigh has so hopefully they will be firing on all cylinders from now on.”
The favourite Sloop Johnb got upset in the the stalls and missed the break, but still managed to finish sixth.
