Ungaro fine after Sandown no-show

Keith Reveley believes Ungaro’s disappointing show in the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown on Saturday was down to an off day.

Robert Ogden’s nine-year-old was well-fancied for the valuable handicap chase, but was never travelling and eventually beat one home in the race won by Monkerhostin.

“He just jumped moderately from halfway. When that horse doesn’t jump he doesn’t get in the race,” said Reveley.

“He’s done that before and he’ll probably do it again. It was just one of those things on the day, but he’s come back fine, no problems.

“Presumably that will be it and we’ll try again next season. He’s got bits and bobs of really good form and hopefully he’ll show that again next year.

“He’s still a high-quality horse but things have got to go right for him on the day.”

Reveley is also looking forward to a successful campaign with Tazbar next winter.

The promising staying novice hurdler bounced back from a poor run at Aintree when going down by only a head to Lodge Lane at Perth last week.

“He only got beat a head after it became a sprint to the line from the third last,” added the Saltburn trainer.

“We’ll rough him off for the summer and hopefully he’ll run in some good races next season.

“We’ll probably start him off on the Flat in the autumn then put him back over hurdles and see how we go. He’ll have his day again in the future.”
