Thebes takes Leighs opener
Temple Of Thebes earned a place in the history books by securing top honours in the inaugural event at Great Leighs, the first new British racecourse since Taunton began operating in 1927.
The Essex track, which has suffered a number of hold-ups over the past few years, was finally given a belated go-ahead on Friday.
Trained by Ed Dunlop, the daughter of Bahri was settled just off the early pace in the Stan James At Great Leighs Maiden Fillies’ Stakes before Stephen Donohoe asked his mount to go about her business soon after the field turned for home.
She hit the front at around the distance and shot clear to justify favouritism at 7-4 by four lengths from Nice Dream.
