Jockey Thornton dislocates shoulder

Andrew Thornton faces an uncertain spell on the sidelines after dislocating his right shoulder in a crashing fall at Kempton yesterday.

The Gold Cup-winning jockey was taken to hospital after parting company with the John Spearing-trained Soulard in the Racing Post Weekender Handicap Chase.

Thornton did not suffer any broken bones in the incident and is expecting to hear on Monday how long the setback will keep him out of action.

"I've dislocated my right shoulder. They took me straight to hospital but the ambulance broke down on the way so I was waiting for another one," he said.

"They were able to pop the shoulder back in and it has been X-rayed. Thankfully nothing is broken and it seems relatively straightforward but I'm not sure at the moment how long it will keep me out for.

"It'll be X-rayed again on Monday and I should know more after that. I'm feeling grand now but it felt absolutely dreadful at the time.

"I've broken my leg and my arm in the past but that was the worst pain I've experienced."
