Ayr falls foul of frost

Ayr have been forced to abandon this afternoon’s meeting due to a frozen track.

Clerk of the course Katherine Self staged a hastily-arranged inspection at 8.15am after overnight temperatures dropped to minus-two degrees.

That initial check proved inconclusive so Self assessed conditions again at 10am.

While temperatures rose slightly after daybreak, any remaining frost was unable to thaw from the ground in time for racing.

Ayr spokesman Iain Ferguson said: “It’s a lovely, sunny day but the temperature did not rise as quickly as we wanted it to. There is still frost around so we’ve had to abandon.”
