Listener fine after Durkam triumph

Sunday’s impressive Punchestown winner The Listener has returned to his stable in Dorset, England, in much the same shape as when he left.

With trainer Robert Alner still in hospital recovering from a serious car accident, the eight-year-old’s trip to Ireland for the John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase was left to his assistant Nick Mitchell.

But there was never any need for concern, as the spring-heeled grey coasted home by 19 lengths.

“He has only lost a few kilos for the whole trip, which is remarkably little really, and we couldn’t be happier with him,” reported Mitchell.

Mitchell confirmed The Listener is on course for another return to Ireland over Christmas, when he will defend the Lexus Chase at Leopardstown.

William Hill make him a best-priced 9-2 shot.
