Run sprints to Doncaster glory

Kandahar Run struck for trainer Henry Cecil in the opening race as the four-day St Leger Festival returned to Doncaster following their £32m redevelopment.

The son of Rock of Gibraltar was handily placed in midfield by Ted Durcan before asked to make his move over two furlongs out.

The 7-2 second favourite quickly stole a couple of lengths out of the field and went on to take the Torne Valley Ltd EBF AHT Maiden Stakes by a length and a quarter from the fast-finishing Tiger Dream (5-1).

Rochefort, the 13-8 favourite, was a length and three-quarters back in third.

Cecil said: “He’s a nice horse and I’m very happy with him.

“He’s entered in the Racing Post Trophy and the Royal Lodge and we’ll see how we go with him.

“The owner bred Hurricane Run so it’s nice to see him have a winner in England.”
