Spencer chooses his moment
Jamie Spencer edged one win closer to reclaiming the jockeys’ championship after smart juvenile Choose Your Moment struck at York.
Spencer had plenty to do as they straightened for home in the hss.com Stakes as eventual runner-up La Chicaluna travelled like the winner two furlongs out.
But Patrick Haslam’s son of Choisir ate up considerable ground as they galloped to the line and scored going away by three lengths.
Haslam said of the 15-8 favourite: “He’s a big, scopey animal and I see him more of a three-year-old.
“He’s got a very nice temperament, and that’s such an important thing when you are keeping horses going for another year.
“Choisir has been such a success story and this one has got potential.”
Richard Fahey secured a fourth success on the Knavesmire this season when Excitement (6-1) showed the way home in the HSS Median Auction Maiden Stakes.
Paul Hanagan needed to hustle the Xaar filly towards the head of affairs but the penny soon dropped as his mount pulled away from Tugalu to prevail by two and a half lengths on the bridle.
Fahey is in America attending the Keeneland yearling sales but his representative, Robin O’Ryan, said: “Once she was settled she did it really well – she’s a nice filly and is going the right way.”
