Turner gets Brits off to a flyer
Hayler Turner justified her late call-up for the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup in some style by collecting her first ever winner at Ascot.
Once again the straight track proved hard to read, with Martin Dwyer taking the lead aboard Dalkey Girl down the stands rail in the Barclays Shergar Cup Juvenile while the rest of the pack travelled further towards the centre.
Gypsy Baby and Dream Eater emerged as serious challengers but Turner’s 33-1 shot Relative Order finished smartly and although he drifted to his left, he won by three-quarters of a length to also help trainer John Best break his duck at the Berkshire course.
“It’s nice to strike that off the list,” said Turner, who was replacing the suspended Seb Sanders.
“I rode in the Shergar Cup last year and it was nice to come back again. He hung a bit and he’s still green, but really game.”
The 7-4 favourite Coasting was a disappointing last while Turner’s Great Britain team and the European side took 15 points apiece to sit together at the top of the table after race one.
