Super Sense streets ahead

Kentucky Derby hero Street Sense made an emphatic winning return in the 500,000 Jim Dandy Stakes at Saratago on Sunday.

Carl Nafzger’s colt was defeated by Curlin in the Preakness in May but showed he is still one of the best in the business with an eyecatching success on his comeback.

Given an armchair ride by regular pilot Calvin Borel, Street Sense will now be primed for the 10-furlong Travers Stakes back at Saratoga on August 25.

And although Sunday’s assignment was over a shorter distance, Nafzger is convinced his three-year-old’s facile length-and-a-half verdict over C P West will have him spot-on for the 1million Travers.

“We learned a lot from this trip,” reflected Nafzger.

“They got him in a trap and kept him there, but he got out and he responded.

“It was a good, solid prep to get him ready for the Travers. I know C P West will probably be back and probably a couple of others and Curlin, too.

“He has a race over the track now – that should be an advantage.”

A delighted Borel told www.thebloodhorse.com: “It’s great to have him back - he needed this race.

I can’t take anything away from Curlin, but my colt is coming back better and stronger than he was in the spring.

“Horses like him come once in a lifetime. I’ve always thought that he was this kind of horse. He was just awesome.

“A horse like him is what it is all about.”
