Quinn mulls Quay target

John Quinn will choose between the Guinness Galway Hurdle and the Old Newton Cup as the next race for Kings Quay following his game victory at Market Rasen.

The five-year-old was cut to 12-1 from 20-1 for the race at Galway on August 2 after he took the totescoop6 Summer Hurdle by a short head.

However, the Malton trainer has yet to commit Kings Quay to the valuable two-mile handicap hurdle and he is also considering the Old Newton Cup on the Flat at Haydock on August 11 for his versatile gelding.

That mile-and-a-half handicap is usually held in early July but the meeting was abandoned through waterlogging and the racecourse executive are keen to save the race.

“We’ll have a think. He’s in at Galway and we are considering it,” said Quinn.

“If he doesn’t go to Galway he’ll run in the Old Newton Cup.”
