Johnny Murtagh had attempted to make all on City Of Tribes, with his fellow Irish raider Contest, the 6-4 favourite, in close attention under Mick Kinane.

The latter looked a big threat but Jamie Spencer got a real tune of Michael Bell’s charge and despite giving the market leader a bump, he powered clear for a two-and-a-half-length success over City Of Tribes, with Contest having to settle for third.

Bell told Channel 4 Racing: “His performance in the Norfolk against Dutch Art, when he was arguably unlucky, was a very good run, but certainly this is his best this year.

“It is very hard for three-year-old sprinters, and we took a view that we would keep him to three-year-old only races this year, certainly until the summer. There’s not many of those about, but he has won two of them, so we are very pleased.

“The Australians have a very good bunch of sprinters this year and it would be very hard for a three-year-old to take them on, so we made a conscious decision we would miss Royal Ascot.

“There’s a Group Three race here in a few weeks and we’ll see how we get on then in a race against the older horses.”
