Finicius on the easy list

Eoin Griffin’s promising colt Finicius will not be seen in racecourse action at the weekend.

The Kilkenny-based trainer handed the three-year-old an entry in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown on Sunday but a slight setback has put him on the sidelines.

“He’s not going there as he scoped wrong during the week so he’ll be on the easy list for a while,” Griffin said.

“We’ll just have to wait and see how long it takes him to get over this before we make any plans.”

Finicius has a string of fancy entries later in the season, including one in the 10-furlong Irish Champion Stakes on September 8.

Griffin believes he is likely to prove effective over that trip in time but is unlikely to have his stamina tested first time out.

“I think he’ll get it but I had him entered in the Derrinstown in the hope that he’d have run by now and we’d have known how we were going,” Griffin added.

“We’ll probably be starting him off over seven furlongs or a mile somewhere.”
