Quinn hoping to strike

Mick Quinn is hoping to return to Newcastle with a winner when his filly Angus Newz contests the Listed williamhill.co.uk Cammidge Trophy at Gosforth Park.

The four-year-old won three times at Listed level last season and Quinn is hoping she proves up to taking on the opposite sex this term.

If not, the former Newcastle United striker will aim his charge at sprint races restricted to fillies and mares.

“She’s fit as anything,” said Quinn. “She has come to herself a little bit quicker this year. She had a spin on the all-weather at Lingfield but she didn’t like it, it drew the sting out of her though because she was bouncing.

“She’ll love the ground but she is into the big wide-world of sprinters now after doing well in her own age group last year.

“If anything in the race needs a gallop or is a bit short of fitness, she will find them out. I’m hoping to win a little Group race with her this year to improve her pedigree but if she’s not up taking on these males she will go down the same route as Indian Maiden last year in the fillies’ and mares’ races.

“Indian Maiden is retired now so hopefully she can farm them like she did.

“With Angus Newz and Rain Stops Play in the Lincoln I’ve got two live chances in two big races and these are the days why I became involved in the game.

“I’ve been scratching around in the lower leagues for a few years but I’m getting towards where I want to be.”
