10-1 shot Burntoakboy takes Coral Cup
Dr Richard Newland plundered another big handicap pot when sending out Burntoakboy to lift the Coral Cup with something in hand.
The 10-1 chance was always going smoothly under 5lb claimer Sam Jones and when his young jockey seized the initiative at the third-last, Burntoakboy took a couple of lengths out of the field.
Powerstation (12-1) ran a big race to claim second but could only get within three lengths of the winner, while 20-1 chance Baron De Feypo stuck to his task to secure third, a further five lengths away.
Fourth spot went to Oscatello, who was making his first appearance for Philip Hobbs.
Burntoakboy travelled noticeably well in such a competitive race and pulled his way into the front rank as the field headed out on the second circuit.
Jumping fluently from that point onwards, he was always moving within himself and showed a smart turn of foot to settle the issue on rounding the home turn in front.
Jones said: ``He travelled so well in the race and he winged everything.
“He jumps brilliantly and was obviously very well in. I wanted a good jump at the last to seal it and got it.
“He’s not the biggest, but he’s got a big heart and keeps on galloping.”
Fledgling trainer Dr Newland added: ``Obviously it's fantastic, my first runner at the Festival. I only train four horses so it's quite an achievement.
“We only bought him from Ireland three or four months ago and they thought he wasn’t very well handicapped over there, but I saw bits of his form and thought they were very good.
“We’ve learned how to ride him now. The key is to get him settled.”
