Ground concern for Meade

A possible rematch between Brave Inca and Iktitaf in the AIG Europe Champion Hurdle later this month is likely to hinge on the ground.

Iktitaf lost his unbeaten record for the season on Friday when going down by a length and a quarter to Colm Murphy’s Champion Hurdle scorer in the December Festival Hurdle.

The AIG Europe Champion Hurdle has since been touted as a possible race for both horses but connections of Iktitaf may sidestep the Leopardstown feature if the going becomes too testing.

“Iktitaf came out of Friday’s race in great form and we will have a serious think about the AIG – although I’m not that keen on taking on Brave Inca again on heavy ground,” said trainer Noel Meade.

“Paul Carberry said Iktitaf wasn’t too happy on very testing ground at Leopardstown and I’m in no rush to make any decisions about the AIG.”

Meade revealed Christmas Hurdle winner Jazz Messenger could also take his chance in the AIG.

The Co Meath handler told the Racing Post: “Jazz Messenger came home from his win at Kempton in great form and he’s a possible for the AIG, although nothing will be decided for another few weeks.”
