Distant Thunder is still laid low with an infection and is “very doubtful” for the Coral Welsh National.

The eight-year-old missed the Hennessy Cognac Gold Cup at Newbury with a dirty scope but trainer Noel Chance had hoped he would recover in time for the Chepstow marathon on December 27.

“He’s very doubtful for the Welsh National. He’s just taking a little bit longer than we anticipated unfortunately,” said Chance.

“We just can’t do anything with him until he’s absolutely right.”

Distant Thunder, who had shaped well when runner-up on his reappearance at Bangor five weeks ago, is a 25-1 chance with the sponsors for the big race.
