Dominguez on board Rob Roy

Ramon Dominguez will partner the Michael Stoute-trained Rob Roy in Saturday’s Breeders’ Cup Mile at Churchill Downs.

Dominguez, who has ridden over 300 winners this year, will team up with the four-year-old after connections elected to book a jockey with lots of American race-riding experience.

Rob Roy landed a Group Two event at Sandown on his seasonal reappearance back in April but posted his best performance to date when second to Pride in the Champion Stakes last time.

Explaining riding arrangements, owner Philip Newton said: “We have booked Ramon Dominguez, who has plenty of experience in top American races, and I’m really looking forward to having a runner at the Breeders’ Cup.

“We’ve always thought Rob Roy was a good horse, but he’s been terribly unlucky for a lot of his career and I’m hoping he can finally win the big prize he has promised to collect since he was a two-year-old.

“He should have won last year’s Craven Stakes, when he met with all sorts of traffic problems, and he then got badly injured in the 2000 Guineas.

“He’s had a few problems since, but he showed how good he is in the Champion Stakes and he’s in good form for Churchill Downs.”

Newton believes Rob Roy will find conditions to his liking in America, where a strong pace looks assured.

“I think conditions there might be ideal for him, because what he needs to be seen at his best is a proper Group One pace,” he told the Racing Post.

“You don’t always get that, which is why Godolphin and Aidan O’Brien so often put in horses to ensure a strong gallop at the highest level, but I think we will get it next weekend.”
