Mick Channon’s smart stayer Baddam heads a list of 36 horses engaged in the totesport Cesarewitch at the five-day declaration stage.

Having lifted the Ascot Stakes at the Royal meeting in June, the four-year-old followed up in the Queen Alexandra four days later but has failed to score in four subsequent starts.

Ante-post favourite Detroit City stood his ground for the two-mile-two-furlong Newmarket slog, along with Sir Mark Prescott’s Key Time and the David Elsworth-trained Saint Alebe.

Saint Alebe won the Ebor in 2003, and having shaped with promise in two recent runs after more than three years off the track, has come in for steady support in recent weeks.

Other interesting possibles include Jamie Poulton’s Theatre – stablemate of Caulfield and Melbourne Cup hope Land‘n Stars – and the Mark Johnston-trained Contact Dancer.

The latter has not won on the level since lifting this famous prize two years ago and could attempt to repeat the trick for his Middleham handler, who could also be represented by McEldowney and Quizzene.
