Midweek decision on Percy bid
A decision on whether Vodafone Derby hero Sir Percy takes his chance in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Sunday week is to be left until next Wednesday or Thursday by Marcus Tregoning.
The trainer admitted that any form of firm ground or very testing conditions at Longchamp would see the Mark Of Esteem colt waiting for the Emirates Airline Champion Stakes at Newmarket on October 14.
“I will not run him on good to firm or if its heavy,” said Tregoning. “I shall be closely monitoring ground conditions as I don’t want to bottom him.
“I shall take a look on Wednesday or Thursday and if it’s not to our satisfaction he won’t run.
“He’ll be a nice four-year-old and we have a great deal to look forward to next year.”
The Arc or the Champion will be Sir Percy’s final outing of the season. Tregoning has ruled out races such as the Japan Cup and the Hong Kong Cup because the ground would be too quick for him.
