No qualms as Boy drops in trip

Snoqualmie Boy will drop down in trip when he tackles the one-mile Vodafone Thoroughbred Stakes at Goodwood on Saturday.

David Elsworth concluded that the Jeff Smith-owned colt, 16th in the Vodafone Derby, has fallen short in the stamina department on his last two starts - despite winning a Listed race at Royal Ascot before finishing sixth to David Junior in the Coral-Eclipse at Sandown.

Elsworth said: “He definitely didn’t stay in the Derby and I felt he was running on empty in the final 100 yards at Royal Ascot (Hampton Court Stakes).

“He then ran a very good race at Sandown when beaten four lengths by a serious horse, but again he was running out of steam up the hill.”

Elsworth has one eye on Salisbury’s only Pattern race as a next step after Goodwood and added: “I’m taking the view that he might be a miler and 12 days after he runs this weekend, he’ll go to Salisbury for the Group Three Sovereign Stakes over that trip.

“We would very much like to win with him on the old Wiltshire soil.”
