Mick aiming at Haydock success

George Margarson is hoping the rain stays away from Haydock so that he can run Young Mick in the bet365 Old Newton Cup.

The Newmarket trainer is keen to run his Royal Ascot winner in the Heritage Handicap over a mile and a half at the Merseyside track on Saturday.

Richard Quinn partnered Young Mick to victory in the Duke Of Edinburgh Handicap at the Royal meeting but with him having announced his retirement, Margarson has turned to Jimmy Quinn (no relation). He won three races on the four-year-old earlier in the season.

“Jimmy Quinn renews his association with him on Saturday, but he won’t run if we get any rain,” said Margarson.

“If they had a lot of rain at Haydock he would wait for the John Smith’s Cup at York the following Saturday.

“He’s come out of the race fine. I’m in no hurry as there’s a big handicap at Ascot (the National Bank Of Dubai Cup) in a few weeks’ time.

“He did a nice gallop this morning and he’s on target for Haydock if things are right.

“The Old Newton Cup would fit in nicely before Ascot. Then we’ll look towards the Ebor.

“It’s a good prize and worth more than the one he won at Royal Ascot.”
