Lucky escape for Kerton

Apprentice rider Charlotte Kerton was lucky to escape serious injury when her mount Violet’s Pride crashed through the rails at Warwick.

Kerton was upsides aboard the Stewart Parr-trained filly in the Warwick School Median Auction Maiden Stakes when the filly ducked towards the rails around two furlongs out.

Although Kerton tried to correct her mount, Violet’s Pride smashed through the rails, unseating the 7lb claimer in the process.

Kerton missed her two other booked rides and was sporting a bandaged wrist after being examined by the racecourse doctor.

“I’m a bit stiff and I don’t really know what’s happened with my wrist at the moment and a I have a sore backside as well!” she told Racing UK.

“I have just seen the replay and I didn’t realise how lucky I was. The lads were a bit surprised to see me walk through the paddock.

“The filly went into the stalls perfect, jumped out brilliantly and was travelling like a winner – I hadn’t moved on her and I really thought I was going to win.

“She’s come to the paddock, seen the other horses, gone to hang so I’ve pulled my stick through and she’s whipped round to the right and just clattered through the rails.

“I’m okay and just got stood down for my other two rides.”

The five-furlong race was eventually won by 2-1 chance Compton Fields.
