Micky Fenton is expecting a big run from Stan James 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa when she returns to a mile in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot next week.
The Pam Sly-trained filly tried her luck in the Vodafone Oaks at Epsom over a mile and a half last time out and ran with great credit to finish fourth behind impressive scorer Alexandrova.
Connections had hinted the Royal meeting would not be on the agenda after she had shown early season tendencies to hang left, but Fenton now believes those have been ironed out and stepping back down to a mile should be ideal.
“She’s electric over a mile, that’s her thing,” he said.
“In the Oaks she did really well but we were always trying to get her to stay just that bit further than she really wanted. Back over a mile and she will be brilliant.
“The race conditions are ideal in the Coronation Stakes but the track is a bit of a worry.
“We weren’t going to go to Ascot but in her last couple of runs she hasn’t given me a hard time at the finish so I think it’s worth taking a shot at,” Fenton told At The Races.
