Yomalo takes Leopardstown heat

Yomalo made the trip from Newmarket to Dublin pay off when charging home under Pat Smullen to land the Group Three Ballyogan Stakes at Leopardstown.

Rae Guest’s six-year-old was having her first crack at Pattern-race company and the 9-1 shot stepped up to the occasion in fine style, producing a fierce burst of speed to beat Noelani by half a length.

Fellow British raider Mecca’s Mate held every chance in the final furlong but could only take third and Miss Sally, sent off the 11-8 favourite, also failed to make the frame and finished fourth.

Guest said: “She has improved over the last two years and she loves firm ground.

“She usually likes a faster pace but I am not complaining and she loves a stiff finish.

“She is in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot but she needs a few to come out, although she might get a penalty for this.”
