Winston mulls over 'lazy' Papal Bull

Robert Winston was left nonplussed by Vodafone Derby possible Papal Bull after the jockey put Sir Michael Stoute’s colt through his paces on Wednesday.

Stoute’s three-year-old could be supplemented for the Epsom Classic after winning the Group Three Chester Vase earlier in the month – and would strengthen Coolmore’s powerful list of contenders for the race.

The likes of Septimus, Horatio Nelson and Dylan Thomas are all in line for the one-mile-four-furlong event on June 3, but Winston was unable to offer any clues that Papal Bull could emerge a serious candidate following a sedate work-out over nine furlongs along Newmarket’s Racecourse Side.

“He’s a lazy type of horse at home and he doesn’t really show you much - that’s his character,” the Irish rider told At The Races.

“He’s a different horse on a racetrack though but I don’t know about the Derby because I’ve only sat on the horse once.

“I do know that Kieren (Fallon) was pretty impressed with him after he won at Chester.”

The Montjeu colt, who has won his last three races, is currently a 16-1 chance with Coral to win the Derby.
