Sir Percy was a reported to be a “bit tired” by his trainer Marcus Tregoning following his gallant run in the Stan James 2000 Guineas.

Last season’s Dewhurst Stakes winner was promoted to favouritism for next month’s Vodafone Derby despite losing his unbeaten record in going down by two and a half lengths to the impressive George Washington.

“He ran a good race. He’s a bit tired today but I’m not surprised with the race, the noise and everything,” said Tregoning.

“It’s some way off but I think he’ll go straight for the Derby. It seems the logical step.

“It was a bit firm out there and I think that’s why he hung to the left.

“If it hadn’t been for George Washington he would have won nicely but that’s racing. We’ve just got to get on with the next target.”
