Corum gamble leaves Gosdem mystified

John Gosden is at a loss to explain the recent Vodafone Derby gamble on his once-raced maiden Corum, who has been backed into 50-1.

The Galileo colt finished 10th of 13 on his only outing to date at Newmarket last October but, according to Gosden, he has yet to do any serious work this year.

“It’s interesting that Corum has been backed as he has only been cantering,” said the trainer.

“He’s only been going at half-speed and hasn’t worked yet this year. He’s a half-brother to Maids Causeway, and he’s by Galileo so he’s well bred.

“He’s a bit week and a little bit immature in his mind. He ran a satisfactory race on his debut but when they quickened he was caught flat footed.

“He is training fine and I will probably start him off over a mile and a quarter and he looks a promising sort of horse.

“He looks unexposed still but he is not a horse that we have really tested yet so whoever has backed him must have been using a crystal ball,” he told At The Races.
