Down Royal abandoned after bomb scare
Racing at Down Royal this afternoon was abandoned due to a security alert.
The Northern Irish track was preparing for the third race at 2.10pm when all those present were forced to evacuate the grandstands and were ushered into the centre of the course.
A representative from the Turf Club said: “They have found a suspect device behind a marquee quite close to the weighing room. The army bomb disposal team are on their way to the scene.”
The card was Down Royal’s richest day of jumps racing and was due to feature the prestigious James Nicholson Wine Merchant Champion Chase, which had attracted two of Ireland’s top chasers, Beef Or Salmon and War Of Attrition.
