Empress Jain wins at Goodwood

Empress Jain was given a canny front-running rode by Philip Robinson to land the Sunday Nursery Handicap at Goodwood.

The filly has tended to spoil her chance at the stalls in the past and had failed to build on a win in the spring, but Robinson managed to settle her well once she broke smartly.

Robinson remained cool when John Egan and Indecent Proposal loomed large and briefly headed the Michael Jarvis-trained 7-1 chance. But he asked for a second effort and she responded in game fashion to score by three-quarters of a length.

“I always had a bit up my sleeve and saved a little bit. She pulled out a bit more and she did what she had to when the other one came to her,” said Robinson.
