Dunlop could field trio in St Leger

John Dunlop could have a strong hand in next month’s Ladbrokes St Leger, although he confirmed that only Kong is a “probable” runner at this stage.

The Arundel handler could also be represented by Tawqeet - who easily landed the Melrose Handicap at York last week - and Predominate Stakes winner Unfurled, with all three priced at around 25-1 for the Doncaster Classic on September 10.

Unfurled will take in a Leger trial at Goodwood this weekend, while Kong was a satisfactory fourth in the Great Voltigeur Stakes.

“Unfurled is in very good form and will run in the March Stakes at Goodwood, which will tell us how we stand with him,” Dunlop told the Racing Post.

“Kong had his first run since the Derby in the Great Voltigeur and will improve on his run there. He’s a probable for Doncaster. I hope he’ll stay.

“Tawqeet was terribly impressive at York last week but that was a handicap and he is only a possible at this stage.”

Unfortunately, another of Dunlop’s entries, Munsef, who was an impressive winner of the King George V Stakes at Royal Ascot at York, will not be taking part.

The trainer reported: “He got injured at York, like so many others, and, because the St Leger is early next month, we don’t have enough time to prepare him for the race."

Ribblesdale Stakes winner Thakafaat is Dunlop’s other entry in the Classic.
