Warwick rained off

Warwick’s evening meeting on Wednesday has been abandoned due to waterlogging.

Warwick’s evening meeting on Wednesday has been abandoned due to waterlogging.

Officials were left with no alternative but to call off the fixture after three and a half inches of rain fell in an hour and a half on Friday night.

“A total of four inches of rain fell on Friday night into Saturday morning and there’s an area two and a half furlongs out where there is still standing water,” said clerk of the course Fiona Needham.

“We are pumping it off but the course won’t be ready for Wednesday, so to be fair to everybody we thought we’d better call it off sooner rather than later.

“It was the sheer volume of rain that has caused the problem – three and a half inches came down in the space of an hour and a half.”

Racing is also scheduled for Warwick on Friday and Needham added: “We are hopeful at this stage that racing will go ahead on Friday.”
