Jockey Kelly has lucky escape after fall

Shane Kelly hopes to be back in action at the weekend after what he described as “a lucky escape” in a bad fall at Windsor last night.

The 26-year-old was on board Jeremy Noseda’s Persona in the tweenhills.com Fillies’ Handicap when four furlongs from home she clipped heels with another horse and came down.

Kelly was taken to hospital after the incident but was allowed out later in the evening and hopes to be back in action by the weekend.

“I was released from hospital about 10 last night, and thankfully nothing is broken,” said Kelly today.

“I had some X-rays taken last night and I am a bit stiff and sore and my back is bruised, but I hope to be back on Saturday.

“I am having some physiotherapy today and tomorrow, so it depends what the physiotherapist thinks.

“It was a lucky escape as it was pretty nasty, but it could have been worse.”

Apprentice Amy Baker was suspended for five days after last night’s incident.

The 7lb claimer was found guilty of careless riding on Wood Spirit and will be out of action on July 1 to July 5.

The stewards decided the fall of Persona was caused by Baker switching left on Wood Spirit, which resulted in the horses clipping heels.
