Castelletto got Newmarket’s prestigious Champions’ Day card off to a flying start with victory in the Cornwallis Stakes.

Castelletto got Newmarket’s prestigious Champions’ Day card off to a flying start with victory in the Cornwallis Stakes this afternoon.

The Bryan McMahon-trained juvenile was up with the pace all the way in the Group Three five-furlong dash, which was rescued from last week’s abandoned Salisbury meeting.

Graham Gibbons had the filly smartly away and quickly tacked over to the stands rail, where Castelletto led with Joseph Henry.

With that rival beaten off Castelletto (15-2) ran on too strongly for Irish challenger Kay Two and then held off the late burst of Cornus.
