Salisbury remains in the balance

Conditions at Salisbury have improved today but Saturday’s meeting featuring the Group Three Cornwallis Stakes is still under threat from the weather.

Heavy rainfall over the past week has already claimed tomorrow’s fixture and the weekend’s feature card hinges on an inspection tomorrow morning.

“Much of the course is improving and today has been a dry, bright and quite warm day,” clerk of the course Jeremy Martin said this afternoon.

“However, we do still have a few areas of the course that are giving cause for concern and it might go to the wire. The plan is to inspect at 8am tomorrow and hopefully make a decision then.

“It has certainly improved a lot today but more rain is forecast to arrive late morning on Saturday.

“There would be nothing worse than to pass the track fit to race and then the heavens open two hours before racing and we become totally unsuitable again – so it is a very difficult decision.”

The going is currently heavy, waterlogged in places.
