Magical result for Meehan
Magical Romance was a shock 40-1 winner of the Sky Bet Cheveley Park Stakes at Newmarket today.
Brian Meehan’s filly came between the two unbeaten fillies, Suez and Damson, to land the Group One contest.
It was a chance spare ride for Robert Winston, who was replacing the injured Jimmy Fortune.
Philip Robinson took Suez to the lead from her rails draw and set a good gallop.
Two furlongs out Magical Romance, Damson and Slip Dance lay down strong challenges to Suez as these four pulled clear of the other three runners.
But Magical Romance proved the stronger inside the final furlong to beat Suez (4-1) by a neck with Damson, the 10-11 favourite, another neck away in third.
Winston told Channel 4: "She ran really well. I feel sorry for Jimmy and I want to dedicate this to him. I hope he comes back soon.
“I got the call up yesterday evening.
“As I had won on the filly last time, I got the opportunity to ride her again. I would like to thank Mr Meehan and her owner Mr Wilson for standing by me.”
