Gatwick to check in at Haydock
Gatwick, who landed a big gamble at Goodwood on Tuesday, is set to make a quick reappearance in the £90,000 (€133,700) totesport Silver Bowl at Haydock Park on Saturday.
Mick Channon, who trains Gatwick for one of Henry Ponsonby’s syndicates of which Alex Ferguson is a member, said yesterday: “Our hand is being forced by the ridiculous 48-hour declarations, so we had to declare our intentions this morning.
“Gatwick’s come out of the race really well and I couldn’t be more pleased with him. He ate his grub and cantered this morning, seemingly none the worse for Tuesday’s race, and, while ideally I would have liked another day to monitor his progress, we have decided to run.
“He has an 8lb penalty, but Sam (Hitchcott) will ride and his 3lb allowance is a big help.
“I hope and think Gatwick will develop into Listed or even Group Three material, but this is the perfect stepping-stone and provided he does not suffer from the bounce factor, he ought to be thereabouts.”
