Barolo claims Goodwood honours

Barolo justified market support to take the opening Sunseeker Stakes on the final day of Goodwood’s May meeting this afternoon.

The Peter Harris-trained 7-1 chance benefited from being ridden close to a moderate early pace and when sent on over two furlongs out by Martin Dwyer, quickly put the result beyond doubt as he stretched clear.

In contrast, favourite Cold Turkey found plenty of trouble in running and could manage no better than fourth.

But meanwhile Barolo was showing no signs of stopping and passed the post five lengths clear of Archduke Ferdinand.

“He is a good horse but it has been hard to find a suitable race for him,” said Harris.

“I hope we can find a Listed race for him now as he has probably won too far to go for another handicap.”

Theatre slipped on the bend in the early stages and unseated Paul Doe, but neither horse or jockey were injured in the incident.

The stewards held an inquiry into the fall but were satisfied that no other horse had been involved.
