Makin lands apprentice award

Apprentice Philip Makin, 19, is the Cocked Hat Northern Apprentice of the month for April.

Chesterfield-born Makin joined Thirsk trainer, David Barron last November and has now ridden a total of 22 career winners – 12 of them this year.

Leading the Northern Flat jockeys’ championship is Tony Culhane with 25 winners so far since the start of the Flat season on turf on March 25.

He is followed by the reigning northern champion Kevin Darley, with 23 winners.
